In 2003 Josephine Starrs organised, with dlux media arts a major international event titled Plaything focusing on current and future trends in the field of digital games, featuring key Australian and international game designers, theorists and artists. Plaything comprised a symposium, games exhibition and catalogue providing platforms for discussion, play and critical discourse, bringing together people who develop, analyse and play digital games. The three-day symposium took place at Sydney University with Keynote speakers Eric Zimmerman, CEO of Gamelab in New York, and Mary Flanagan, US academic, games researcher and designer as well as five other international and 18 national speakers. This event was the first of its kind in Australia and can be seen as a major contribution towards defining a critical framework to analyse the culture of digital games.
